If you are considering using any open source application for your software/web requirements like market place application, CMS, Enterprise CMS , E-commerce shopping application, document management system  or any other,  then evaluate the options not only on your current requirements but also think for future requirements which you expect for sure.  Based on our experience we are listing few points which one should consider before selecting any open source solution:

  • Check the developer community of a particular open source. If developer community is large and active then it becomes easy to get help and cater future requirements
  • Check blogs, forums and market places for standard add-ons availability along with support system of that particular open source application
  • See how flexible the solution is; can it be integrated with any other software? Are APIs available for accessing data from other solutions? etc.
  • Check documentation and manuals available for quick reference

Recently we came across with a requirement where client requested heavy customization in an open source solution, while that open source solution was not very much popular and we never come cross with customization requirement earlier in that solution. So, we were skeptic to invest our time to explore that solution because we were not sure about ROI, so finally we refused to client for developing their customization requirements and suggested them to opt for alternate more stable and widely used open source solution to meet their requirements.

That’s how we realized that how important it is to choose right open source solution so that any customization can be easily done and decided to share this concern on internet with you all.
